Why We Started Designing and Making Our Own Souvenirs

When we opened Turnmeyers in Front Royal, Virginia, we always knew we wanted the store to feel connected to this place.

We are not just a gift shop that happens to be near Shenandoah National Park. We are part of the community. We live here, work here, explore here, photograph here, and raise our family here.

Over time, we realized something important: the souvenirs we offered should feel just as connected to this area as we are.

That is why we started designing and making more of our own products right here at Turnmeyers.

We Wanted Souvenirs That Actually Felt Local

Front Royal and Warren County are special places. We are the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park, the start of Skyline Drive, home to beautiful river views, mountain overlooks, local history, wildlife, small businesses, and a downtown that has its own personality.

Generic souvenirs can be nice, but they do not always tell the story of a place.

We wanted products that felt like Front Royal. We wanted designs that reflected Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah River, local landmarks, and the outdoor lifestyle that brings so many people here.

That meant creating our own.

Every Design Starts With A Real Connection

Many of our designs begin with places we have visited, photos we have taken, trails we have walked, sunsets we have watched, and ideas that come directly from living in this area.

Sometimes it starts with a photograph from Shenandoah National Park. Sometimes it is a Front Royal landmark. Sometimes it is a phrase, a memory, a mountain view, or something a customer says in the store.

That personal connection matters to us.

When someone takes home a mug, ornament, magnet, shirt, coaster, or keepsake from Turnmeyers, we want it to feel like more than just an item. We want it to feel like a memory from their visit.

Making Products Ourselves Lets Us Be More Creative

Designing and making our own souvenirs gives us the freedom to create products you will not find everywhere else.

Instead of ordering the same items that every other store can buy, we can experiment with new ideas, seasonal collections, local photography, limited editions, and small-batch designs.

Some products are made with our laser. Some are sublimated in our shop. Some are printed from our own artwork or photography. Some begin as a simple idea and turn into a full collection.

That flexibility lets us keep the store fresh and give customers something more meaningful to choose from.

We Can Create For Front Royal, Shenandoah, And Skyline Drive Specifically

One of the biggest reasons we started making more of our own souvenirs is because our area deserves products made specifically for our area.

Front Royal is not just “near the mountains.” It is a destination with its own identity.

Skyline Drive is not just a road. It is one of the most scenic drives in the country and often the reason someone first discovers this region.

By creating our own products, we can design around the places people actually visit and remember.

Small-Batch Products Let Us Keep Improving

Making our own products also allows us to listen and adjust.

If customers love a certain design, we can make more. If a product needs improvement, we can change it. If a new local event, season, or idea inspires us, we can create something quickly.

That is one of the best parts of making products ourselves.

We are not locked into only what a catalog offers. We can keep learning, testing, improving, and creating.
