Join landscape photographer Scott Turnmeyer for a small-group night photography workshop in the mountains near Front Royal, Virginia. This outdoor field session is designed to help you confidently photograph the night sky in Shenandoah National Park under a variety of conditions.
Depending on the date, moon phase, and sky conditions, this workshop may include photographing:
• Stars and night landscapes
• The Milky Way (seasonal)
• Moonrise or moonlit mountain scenes
• Meteor showers on select dates
• Long-exposure night photography techniques
This workshop focuses on night photography only.
Additional workshops include Sunset, Sunrise, and Waterfalls, and can be combined for automatic savings.

We’ll meet after dark at a scenic location in Shenandoah National Park to learn how to photograph the night sky using manual settings, long exposures, and proper focusing techniques. You’ll learn how to balance ISO, shutter speed, and aperture to capture sharp stars, detailed landscapes, and dramatic night scenes.
This workshop also covers how to focus in low light, reduce noise, compose strong images in dark conditions, and adjust settings based on whether the sky is dark, moonlit, or partially illuminated. Scott will provide individual guidance throughout the session so you understand exactly what settings to use and why.
Location Details
To ensure the best possible conditions, the exact meetup location will be selected based on weather, cloud cover, and sky visibility. The workshop will take place in Shenandoah National Park as near as possible to Front Royal, VA or the Thornton Gap Entrance.
This workshop is offered on multiple dates.

Each participant will receive individualized guidance throughout the session.
This is an outdoor workshop and will proceed in most weather conditions unless safety is a concern.
Please note: If this workshop is inside Shenandoah National Park then park admission will be the responsibility of the registrant upon entry.

This class is not recommended for phone-only photographers.
What to Bring
Scott recommends bringing the following:
- A camera with manual mode capability
- Tripod (required for night photography)
- Wide angle lens recommended (but not required)
- Remote shutter release (recommended)
- Charged battery(ies) and memory card(s)
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Warm clothing — temperatures at elevation can be much cooler at night
- Notebook or notes app (optional)

Scott Turnmeyer is a professional photographer based in the Shenandoah Valley with experience spanning landscapes, wildlife, sports, portraits, and weddings. His work has earned national recognition, and his passion for teaching has helped photographers of all skill levels gain confidence behind the camera.
Scott’s style focuses on clarity, real-world application, and helping students understand why settings work — not just what buttons to press. During the workshop, Scott provides direct guidance on camera settings and composition to ensure you leave with strong, usable images.

Cancellation & Transfer Policy
Due to limited class size and advance planning, all registrations are non-refundable.
If you need to cancel, you may transfer your registration to:
- A future workshop of the same type (with at least 7 days’ notice), or
- Another person with at least 7 days’ notice
Transfers and credits cannot be issued for cancellations made within 7 days of the event or for no-shows.
This workshop is rain or shine. If the workshop is canceled due to unsafe weather or low enrollment, participants will receive a opton of transferring to a future date.
